Final Passport Rule

Final Passport rule issued for land and sea passangers.

Departments of Homeland Security and of State issued the final rule making concerning the requirements of passports for land and sea border crossings under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. After years of development following 9/11, this ruling is the end of the process and can be considered FINAL ensuring you will have the proper identification when traveling.

Effective June 1, 2009, the following rules take effect for cruise passengers

:U.S. citizens on cruise voyages that begin and end at the same U.S. port (closed-loop itineraries) must show proof of citizenship* and government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license). A passport will not be required for passengers that fall into this category.

*Documents include: Original or certified copy of birth certificate; Naturalization papers; Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by Department of State.

All other passengers and/or itineraries (such as cruises which begin in one U.S. port and return to a different U.S. port or any cruise that begins or ends in a foreign port) will require a passport or other recognized document. For a list of accepted documents, see http://www.travel.state.gov/The good news for a majority of cruise passengers – American citizens that leave and return on their cruise from the same U.S. port – is that the travel document requirements will remain largely unchanged from how the industry is operating today.

I continue to encourage travelers to obtain passports to allow the broadest travel opportunities. You can visit http://www.travel.state.gov/ to obtain information on how to apply at more than 9,000 passport acceptance facilities in the United States.

*Please call George Hammond to set up an appointment for specific passport requirements regarding your cruise reservation. I will be glad to help you!

San Juan Puerto Rico

After being told by the local people that Old San Juan is one of the biggest
and best natural harbors in the Caribbean and is the second
oldest city in the Americas (after Santo Domingo, which was officially founded on August 5, 1498.

I had to see for myself, and they are right.
San Juan is full of rich history and beautiful waters.

Being located in northern coastal Plains region in the karst zone, north of Aguas Buenas and Caguas; east of Bayamón; and west of Carolina and Trujillo Alto.

San Juan is a major port and tourist resort of the West Indies and is the oldest city under the U.S flag. The metropolitan area known as San Juan has 3 distinct areas: Old San Juan, the Beach & Resort area, and other outlying communities, the most important: Río Piedras, Hato Rey, Puerta de Tierra, and Santurce. Río Piedras was founded in 1714 but became incorporated into San Juan in 1951.

Visiting Old San Juan would not be complete without taking a bus tour around the island and visiting downtown. The quaint shops, the friendly people, and the history behind the forts that protected them from pirates in the 1400's will leave you amazed and wanting to come back again and again.

My favorite fort was El Morro, sounds pretty powerful doesn't it?

And this six-level fortress certainly is. Begun in 1540 and completed in
1589. San Felipe del Morro was named in honor of King Phillip II. Most of the walls in the fort today were added later, in a period of tremendous construction from the 1760's-1780's. Rising 140 feet above the sea, its 18-foot-thick wall proved a formidable defense.

It fell only once, in 1598, to a land assault by the Earl of Cumberland's forces. The fort is a maze of tunnels, dungeons, barracks, outposts and ramps. El Morro is studded with small, circular sentry boxes called "garitas" that have become a national symbol.

The views of San Juan Bay from El Morro are spectacular.

The area was designated a National Historic Site in February 1949 with 74 total acres. And has the distinction of being the largest fortification in the Caribbean.

Kids Or No Kids

"I'm looking for a cruise with no kids. An 'adults only' cruise would be great.

"I want a cruise with lots of kids' activities."

I get requests for both kinds of cruises, and paradoxically, sometimes the two types of cruises are actually the same cruise. First, let's consider the case where a client wants a cruise with as few kids as possible. Some cruise lines discourage kids onboard by having absolutely no kids' activities. If you book a cruise like that, and there are some kids onboard, that just tells you that the travel agent for those families didn't really book them on the right cruise. But generally, kids will be few and far between.

But suppose you want a cruise with few kids but the cruise lines that discourage kids onboard just aren't for you. (There could be lots of reasons for this.) In that case, you might be best off with a cruise line that has lots of kids programs. As strange as this sounds, when the cruise line is keeping the kids busy with planned activities, they are not running around the ship on their own and you don't see them too much. And more and more of these cruise lines are also starting to add adult only sections of the ship. Remember too, that if you choose a late seating for dining (8:00 PM) the dining room will have fewer kids. The ships in the "contemporary" class of cruise lines usually have the most kids activities.

Of course if you're taking your kids on a cruise, there are lots of cruise lines that have organized, age appropriate activities. Many have optional baby sitting services available if you want a late night out with your significant other. Some ships have limited activities while in port, so if you want to leave the kids behind while you go off on a shore excursion, make sure you ask your travel agent about the extent of activities while in port.

So take the kids, or not. Either way there are good choices available.

Why Cruising Is a Great Value

There is a reason every day, more and more people are discovering the all inclusive pleasures of a cruise vacation. More singles, families, couples, and honeymooners are sail away on vacations of their dreams.

Here are some reasons why:
The price of your ticket includes your meals, snacks, and room service. All onboard activities, as well as nightly parties & entertainment. Not to mention the relaxing voyage to some of the most exciting and exotic places in the world.

You will find the cruise ship is a floating resort, with all the things a fine resort has to offer and more. You will meet new friends and share new memories. You can spend your days and nights as lively or leisurely as you like.

Avoid the worries of having to make dinner or show reservations. No packing or unpacking. A cruise allows you to be lie back and be pampered. Enjoy fabulous cuisine and one great show after another. Let your cares float away and your dreams become a reality.
Most cruises have world class spas, and on board fitness center, hot tubs and several pools. Each line has its own personality and price. There is a cruise for each family and budget.

Most cruise lines have something to for everyone. Kids are happy with crafts, pizza and games at their clubs. Teens rave about the dancing, soda fountains and hangout computer zones in the teen’s only club. And, adults find plenty to do at the adult’s only pools and spas. Make reservations for dinner at exclusive restaurants or eat a meal on deck and watch the sea go by.

Choosing the right cruise experience:

· For a first time cruiser: Try a Caribbean cruise.

· Traveling with your kids: Look into a Disney land sea cruise. You can spend 3-4 days
in Orlando at the Disney theme park, and then hop onto the ship in Cape Canaveral.

· For the experienced cruiser: Ask about trying on of the smaller, more intimate ships that are able to go deeper into regions the larger boats could never reach. Large boat amenities small boat benefits. For example, Princess cruises does some terrific Alaskan cruises to ports never seen by the larger boats. Plus, you can add onto your cruise the most amazing land tours of 5-7 days inland Alaska in the middle of the trip for the experience of a lifetime.
